Kavita, originally from Sydney Australia, has spent the last 10 years living and working as a Sommelier and Wine Director in the Asia-Pacific Region.
She began her wine career in Sydney working with restauranter Tim Connell who encouraged her to persue her sommelier certification whilst working at both Coast and Manta with Chef Steve Manfredi.
During her two-year course, Kavita met Ron Georgiou, who at the time, was one of only 18 Australians to hold the title of Master of Wine. With her studies completed, Ron Georgiou selected Kavita to be the head sommelier of the Conrad property in the Maldives where she was responsible for an international wine list of over 900 labels and training the 85-strong F & B staff spread across three bars and seven restaurants, including the world’s first underwater restaurant – Ithaa.
After two years in the Maldives, Kavita gave up the opportunity to work alongside chef Heston Blumenthal at the Fat Duck in England after being offered the role of Regional Cellarmaster for Aman resorts in South-East Asia. In this role, based out of the Singapore head office she spent two years developing the individual property programs, of nine of the groups’ resorts within Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. With a key focus always on education Kavita was able to develop a number of wine workshops and training programs designed specifically to enhance the knowledge of over 200 staff across this region.
Following on from this, Kavita then spent the next 2 years based out of New Delhi, India where she played a key role in the opening of Amanresorts’ first city location, whilst overseeing the wine programs of 4 additional properties located within India and Sri Lanka. During this period the Aman New Delhi wine list was awarded The Best Wine List in India by the Times of India and Kavita voted one of the 10 most influential wine personalities in India by CNN.
In late 2010 Kavita joined the Press Room Group in Hong Kong. Regarded as one of the most successful and innovative restaurant groups in the country, she was responsible for the wine, beverage selections and concepts across their twelve restaurants which varied from high-end michelin stared dining to casual eateries. During her two years in Hong Kong Kavita was not only voted as one of the Top 10 sommeliers in the country by SCMP but additionally One of 20 people Changing the Way we Eat and Drink by Time Out Magazine, a prestigious accolade in a city with such a developed dining culture. The article described her work within the city’s food and beverage industry by saying;

Since taking on the role of wine director at The Press Group, she’s carefully revamped the wine lists at the group’s multiple outlets and given each of them a distinct personality. She’s opted for organic and biodynamic bottles at The Pawn, and an all-French wine list at The Press Room which highlights lesser known regions such as Jura and Savoie. Perhaps her most impressive collection is the aptly named ‘the wine atlas’ at The Principal, which lists more than 700 hand-selected bottles from across the globe. It’s Kavita’s way of getting us to go beyond our comfort zones of Burgundy and Bordeaux and to explore Xinomavro grapes from Greece, Chardonnays from Israel and Rieslings from Slovakia.”
In addition to working for the above respected establishments, Kavita has simultaneously been pursuing her Master Sommelier qualification. She has completed her advanced sommelier certification and passed both the theory and practical components of the final level of the MS exam, currently Australia’s youngest and only female to have reached this level. A regular contributor to a number of wine publications and judge for the Decanter World Wine Awards Kavita has built an extensive network of distributors, sommeliers, restauranteurs, hoteliers, journalists and wine lovers throughout the Asia-Pacific Region.
Today she runs her own company Voyageur Selections. Established in 2014, she works as a brand ambassador for small-medium sized wineries telling their story in the Asia-Pacific region: by executing a multifaceted market engagement strategy, comprehensive distributor review and selection, and a communication framework that focuses on brand development, training and project creativity.Additionally she continues to offer beverage program consultation services to restaurants and hotels, designing and managing unique global wine selections.
Over the first decade of her career Kavita has established a philosophy whereby she believes in celebrating the wines of the world that truly speak of place, the nature of the vintage and the personality of the grower. Her favourite part of the wine world is getting to know the names and faces behind every label and communicating their stories around the globe.
